Will my Partner Feel Left Out if I Hire A Doula?
Will a doula replace my partner? It’s one of the most common, unspoken fears, especially from the birth partner’s perspective.
You might be excited about having a doula, but also thinking, “Will this make my partner feel irrelevant and sidelined? Will I hurt their feelings by wanting more support?”
Here’s my answer to you: I’m there for both you and your partner – I get to support both of you!
Do I Need a Doula if I have a Supportive Partner?
Maybe you’re thinking that you have the most supportive husband/partner in the world. They’re loving, gentle, and totally on board, so do you really need a doula?
The answer is simple: YES! You don’t need a doula because your partner isn’t enough. You hire a doula so your partner doesn’t have to do it all alone. (Finding the right doula is a blog that can help you decide who the right doula is for you)
"When she first talked to me about getting a doula, I wasn't sure what the role was, or why we needed one. But I couldn't have been more wrong! I got a better understanding of what my partner was going to go through, and Nicola gave me the confidence and knowledge to know what my role should be."

A Doula Strengthens Your Relationship
As an experienced doula, I know I am coming into a very sacred and intimate space. There is such a unique opportunity for your relationship with your partner to deepen during this time.
During our prenatal visits, I encourage your partner to join us as well. It’s the perfect chance for each of you to voice your expectations. Your husband/partner can express how they would like to be involved, what they would like to do, and what they would prefer not to do. Knowing this helps me help your partner meet their expectations.
I help your husband/partner:
- Know what to do when labour intensifies
- Feel confident giving you emotional and physical support
- Take breaks when they need to without feeling guilty, because they know you will be cared for
- Be fully present without trying to ‘fix’ anything
So many partners tell me how much they felt part of the birth experience too.
Birth Partners Need Support Too
If this is your first pregnancy, there can be immense pressure on your partner to be everything for you: coach, protector, birth expert, and mind reader… That’s a lot for anyone to hold, especially in this unfamiliar world of high emotions and tension.
I create space for your husband/partner to show up as their best self. Not as a stand-in midwife or doula, but as a present, loving husband/partner, who knows you so intimately – every sigh, move, or gesture, who has their unique role to play. This often means gently guiding them during labour, suggesting ways to connect and support you, or simply letting them rest, so they can be fully present when you need them most.
And if tensions run high for them, I’m there for that too. ( Here’s How to Advocate for Yourself in the NHS Maternity System”
Birth Partners & Doulas Work in Synergy
Do you know what synergy is? It’s when each person involved brings their best qualities and traits to support you. They are more effective TOGETHER than alone. It’s like coffee and aspirin working more effectively together in relieving a headache, than alone. Or, another example is geese covering a greater distance together, rather than flying solo.
As a tight-knit couple, no one knows you better than your partner. As a doula who has supported many births, I am familiar and comfortable with how birth unfolds and the deviations it may take, too. There is no better support for you than this: You are getting the full spectrum of love and skill.
The Secret of Connected Birth Teams
I see this again and again: when the husband/birth partner feels prepared and supported, they’re confident to show up more fully and in a way that is meaningful to you.
If they are timing contractions, holding you during contractions, or encouraging you to rest completely in between, I’m there to help BOTH OF YOU feel calm, connected and cared for.
I was supporting a couple where they wanted some privacy and alone time in the bathroom. She was taking a shower and wanted her husband to join her, but he had no change of clothes. I promised I’d guard the door until he was re-dressed. When they came out, smiling and connected, she had dilated a further 2 or 3 cms.
Your Birth Dream Team = Love +Skill
You deserve more than one person trying to do everything. You deserve a circle of people, a steady support system, each bringing their unique way of love and care.
When your birth support includes both love and experience, the results are phenomenal.
Want to chat as a couple? I’d love to meet up with both of you and talk about how we can walk this beautiful path together.
